Top 10 albums in 2008 (the last three)
It’s the final countdown. Let’s begin.
3. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
The self entitled debut album from this five-piece band from Seattle is astonishingly well done, and should be on everyone’s top album lists of 2008 (and it is on most of them). The album features great vocals, great musiciansship and great melodies. There are no weak songs on the album, songs like “He doesn’t know why” is maybe the best song of 2008. According to wikipedia, the quintet describe their music as “baroque harmonic pop jams”. They have a very pleasant sound, and it doesn’t get boring, despite their calm, down to earth sound. Well worth a place on the list.
2. Meshuggah - obZen
What a beast of an album. Meshuggah has with obZen really nailed the combination of complexity, heavyness and completeness. There’s only one band that really sounds like Meshuggah, and the still sound like Meshuggah. Tomas Haake is one of my favorite drummers, and what he does behind the kit this time is begyond me. Songs like bleed are just plain impossible to play. The complexity of the song with their polyrhytms makes this album one that you just don’t get bored of, because it’s really hard to get total control over what’s going on (even though I’m trying to play Pravus on a bit slower pace, it’s so fun). Great allround quality, and the second place is yours.
1. Gojira - The Way Of All Flesh
Before Gojira released their latest album entitled “The Way of All Flesh”, everyone was wondering if they could top their previous album “From Mars, To Sirius”, which was a monster of an album. And they did it. The Way of All Flesh is perfection, the overall quality of album is outstanding, and it’s just hightlight after hightlight. It’s pretty weird that I’ve heard songs like Vacuity so many times it’s scary, and despite beeing a rather straight forward track, I’m not getting bored with it, the same counts for songs like Oroborus. The album is a tad more tricky to get into, because of a bit more complex musical structure, but when you first get into the album, you just can’t let it go. Mario Duplantier is so extremely talented, and I can only dream of becoming 20% of what he is. He must be the must underrated drummer of all time. Ow, and if you ever get the chance to see this band live: Do it. They are the tightest band you will ever see. This album is from my point of the best from 2008. Congratulations.
